Political terms of office in Australia

It is now clear to me that our politicians only make policy (and decisions to spend money) in the few months leading up0 to an election. there are some small matters covered in between but the decisions made then are usually bad and often unpopular.

maybe it is time to rethink how we employ these guys (overwhelmingly men) and just give them a few months casual employment every few years. it would save the taxpayer a considerable sum and with less tv air time, their celebrity status would diminish and maybe we would see some humility (not the false hammy kind) return. after a time we may even find some politicians who actually think they are working for the people (i am sometimes hopelessly optimistic).

a chance to start crawling out of the mess we are in?
