a friend of mine once said that the greatest crime is time wasting. she didn't mean spending a relaxed day at the beach or reading a novel. what she meant was causing somebody to have to do one thing when they could be doing something better. I said “what about things like murder?” and she replied “think of how much time that wastes”.

she wasn’t trivialising the suffering of victims of violent crime. On the contrary, she pointed out that these crimes can lead people to spend the rest of their lives in suffering instead of what else they may have been doing.

the suggestion was made that the severity of a crime should be judged based on the cumulative time wasted as a consequence. i might leave a discussion of the merits of this scheme to the legal ethicists, jurists and legislators but the increasing time i spend dealing with spam make the idea more appealing every day
